What is woocommerce?

Simply put: WooCommerce is an open-source e-commerce plugin for WordPress. It is designed for small to large-sized online merchants using WordPress. Launched on September 27, 2011, the plugin quickly became popular for its simplicity to install and customize and free base product.

For us this is the go to plugin for your own online store. It coupled in with WordPress like a glove and the multitudes of decent plugins that are compatible with the woocomerce is almost infinite from auctions / multiple vendors and thousands of premium themes. 

Woocommerce as the Gold standard for any wordpress shop gives you an awesome base to build on and customize your shop from the display to the complete buyers journey through the store. There are certainly some suggestions that we have for any person using woocommerce to set up and check when you embark on using this awesome piece of software:

payment check out – for ZAR we use Payfast – it is simple and the plugins are free, also with payfast you dont need a merchant acocunt with your bank to accept payments online. 

check the currency is set to ZAR with left set up of the currency symbol. Note if you want to use paypal on your store then your store will need to be in a currency that paypal accepts like US dollars / EURO or GBP. Don’t stress if you going for world domination you can also accept rands, simply integrate a currency switcher and set payfast for Rands and USD for paypal. The last suggestion as far as show stoppers go is delivery – the simplest version is the default / flat fee shipping, set up a zone for SA and you will see this option. You can really get technical and international with plugins linked with the likes of DHL. Courier companies have come a long way in this area and you are able to link in with them and give accurate rates immediately at check out. Side not on this option is that you will need size and weight of all the physical products in your store.
