A responsive website makes your content fit smart phones and tablets. It’s not a brand new site, it’s easily built and easily used. But best of all: it’s kind on your budget!

While it’s not news anymore that we are already in a world where mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are the current future in terms of connectivity and search, a number of my clients are still being given confusing and conflicting advice about how to make their websites mobile and tablet friendly.

Some are still being told to design and build separate sites – one for desktop and one for mobile. In fact, I very recently heard of a developer who advised their client to design and build three different sites, one also for tablet! Fortunately, the client realised that he was being seen as a cash machine by the developer and declined.

The good news is that with today’s technology, when it comes to seeing your site on mobile applications, responsive design is one of the best ways forward for most websites.

or those of my clients who are still mulling over how to move forwards on this, I’d like to outline some of the main arguments for a responsive website.

Responsive is Easy to Develop

In the good old days (last month!), developers needed to create a new mobile version from scratch. This was time consuming – which meant expensive. In today’s responsive environment, the existing site is simply restyled to fit mobile devices of all sizes.

In our agency, we are very big on WordPress as a development platform for our clients, even for large and complex sites, and I am always delighted by how quick it is to restyle even the most intricate of designs into an effective responsive format. However, even for sites that are built on Joomla or Magenta or use ASP, we have found that they too are very quick and easy to make responsive.

And not to labour the point too much, but “quick” means much lower budgets and quicker to market, which is really good news for my clients.

Responsive Reduces Content Management Time

When your website is responsive, you only have to manage one set of content instead of two sets of content for two different platforms.

Enough said.

Responsive Preserves your SEO Assets

This point represents a huge benefit for making sure that you get as much traffic as possible from search engines.

By keeping your site the same and using responsive design, instead of having two versions of your site, you keep, in essence, the same content on the same pages. From an onsite optimisation point of view, that means that you keep the same important relevancy for each of your priority landing pages. And from the point of view of inbound link juice, well, you keep those assets too.

This means that you don’t need to duplicate your SEO efforts. And, once again, this means you keep more control of your budgets.

Responsive is What Google Wants

Last but not least: responsive is a good bet because our Lord and Master, Google, says so (Blessed be He). Amen.
